Nicaragua Wildlife (Blog Post)

Learning about Nicaragua has not only been interesting but also eye-opening. It is such a diverse country.  There are large rainforests, to savannahs, and even to very dry, tropical forests. Nicaragua is home to over 1400 species of animals as well as 12000 species of plants. There is thought to be over 5000 unidentified species. From monkeys to jaguars, parakeets to owls and turtles to snakes, Nicaragua has them all. As you can see, Nicaragua is extremely biodiverse. Starting in 1958, their government began protecting wildlife areas. In 1990, there was 25 protected areas. Now, the Nicaraguan government currently protects around 17% of land within the country. There are 78 protected land areas, each home to hundreds of species. The fact that we will be able to view and experience all of the animals is extraordinary. I think I am most interested in the aquatic life such as caimans as well as many of the fish. Reading Tropical Nature opened my eyes to how great of an experience being in Nicaragua will be. Words cannot express how eager I am to go and I am very ecstatic to start the adventure.

Summary of Media Source about Nicaraguan Economy

There has been a slowdown in Central America as a whole, but in spite of this the Nicaraguan economy is continuing to grow at a fast pace. The stronger economy is leading to more jobs for people to escape poverty. From 2012-2015 the formal sector workforce grew from about 500,000 to about 783,000 jobs. Tax revenue in that same time has more than doubled as well. Currently less than 30 percent of the population is considered poor, which is a record low for the country and a 12.5 percent decrease from 2009. One important reason for why the economy has progressed the way it has is because of tourism. According to one source there were 1.4 million tourists in 2015 which resulted in about 450 million dollars in revenue. Overall the country of Nicaragua is experiencing a nice period of economic growth that is helping to make the lives of everyday people in the country much better.
